WARNING: This story discusses suicide and sexual abuse.

The death of a young man Glorvale was the result of a tragic accident after an experiment with “blackout”, while his ability to recover affected brain damage caused by exposure to solvents, said the coroner.

20 -year -old Heart Standtrue was found not reacting in the Christian community painting store, where he worked in October 2018. He died in the Christchurch hospital 10 days later.

In the findings published on Friday, the coroner Alexander Cunninghame discounted a script in which Standtrue died by suicide, instead, stating that “the death of the sincere was an accident that took place during his attempt to expose independently.”

She said that there was no evidence that his death occurred during sexual activity.

“Sincere’s death was a tragedy,” said Cunninghame Cunning.

“Perhaps it is unfortunate that Sincere’s death attracted such a level of speculation, but I hope that the release of these findings will make it rest.”

During the investigation in Greymouth, the court heard that young people in Glorvale, in particular school -age boys, played “Blacking Out Games”. Witnesses suggested that attraction was due to the fact that it was temporarily deprived of oxygen.

Koroner noticed that he honestly mentioned “darkening” others in the community during the year before his death, intentionally limiting his respiratory tract, and expressed the belief that he could refrain from breathing and start again.

“While some adults said Sincere that the darkening was stupid and dangerous, it does not seem that the real dangers of his activities were explained to him,” she said.

The coroner also heard evidence that Gloravale parents are withdrawing from the confusion to calm them down during Sunday service or meeting – the practice that was said was harmless.

“This evidence of children’s behavior management is relevant to the problems of this investigation. This confirms that he is honestly aware of the practice of “dark” by suppressing breath, which was considered harmless, at least by some in the community, “she said.

The coroner recommended that Gloravale leaders would work on all the guidelines of the Ministry of Education, principles or resources about the acute suffocation induced among the community to be distributed.

Standtrue worked at Glorvale’s Paint Shop from the age of 15, where he was exposed to solvents.

The Cunninghame coroner said that “toxic leukoencephalopathy” was the “cause” of his death.

“The sincere brain has been damaged because it was exposed to solvents. Changes in his brain influenced his ability to recover from an incident that eventually killed him, “she said.

She said that it was not possible to determine whether honest was exposed to solvents as a result of working with them in a dangerous manner or as a result of deliberate inhalation.

At the time of death, Standtrue Koroner was pleased that he had improved the practice of safe work in Glorvale, but the management of dangerous substances was Not fully consistent with safety standards.

She recommended that the community would ensure that all solvents were stored in a safe place, when they were not in use, the members used them in accordance with the safety standards and were educated about the threats related to exposure, and the containers were properly ridiculous.

Cunningham Koroner noticed that the investigation into the death of Standtrue became an opponent.

“Those who live in the community took the position that Sincere’s life was easy and happy, and his death was the result of a tragic accident after an experiment with” brightness ” – she said.

“Those who left the community took the position that honest was great challenges in his everyday life, which seriously influenced his mental health, ultimately leading to death through suicide.”

Standtrue was the oldest of 11 siblings and in good physical health except deafness.

In Greymouth, an investigation into the death of a 20-year-old man from Glorvale is underway. Heart Standtrue died in the Christchurch hospital in November 2018, the oldest 11 siblings in his family.

He was considered slower than his peers to develop and did not reach the same milestone as other people his age, such as obtaining a driving license, accepting a declaration of Glorvale or marriages.

Standtrue can be impulsive and was thought to have a problem with anger management.

Cunninghame Koroner discovered that he was He teased and threatened sometimes and experienced Unwanted sexual progress from other young men in the community.

Studied “harmful sexual behavior”

The investigation was heard from the senior sergeant detective Kirsten Norton, who was responsible for the examination of “harmful sexual behavior” in Glorvale, including intergenerational offenses usually passing between older and younger boys.

Norton said that 61 young people were identified as involved in this behavior, or as a criminal, peer or victim.

In the notes of evidence, she said: “There were many incidents in which these boys offended their younger sisters.”

The coroner said that there was no direct evidence that Standtrue was a victim of harmful sexual behavior referred to.

He did not appear in any of the two large police investigations and was not identified as a victim in any criminal proceedings related to the community.

She noticed that he worked on a project he was proud of, he had events in his life that he could not wait for and there was no evidence that he expressed his thoughts about suicide or despair.

Sister Standtrue Rose Standtrue, who left the community in 2021, supported the theory that her brother’s death was suicide, and negative experiences led him to the decision that taking his life was the only way out.

In the statement provided, the RNZ was critical of the coroner’s findings.

“In my opinion, limiting the scope of investigation to exclude the interpretation of religious doctrine (except for a direct entry to understand some problems), the coroner overlooked the key feature of Glorvale,” she said.

“In Gloravale, the doctrine dictates every aspect of life, eliminating all divisions between secular and saint. This supervision potentially hinders the full understanding of the problems discussed, significantly affecting the outcome of the case. “

Rose Standtrue said that her legal team believes that key information about the schedule of events leading to her brother’s death has been inappropriate.

She said that her brother was a loving person with a beautiful soul and a friendly heart.

“It was honest too early and we miss him every day,” she said.

In a separate statement presented, RNZ Parents Standtrue Caleb and Hannah Standtrue expressed thanks to Cunninghamem Coroner.

“We would like to express or recognize the care and sensitivity that the coroner Alexander Cunninghame showed during investigation into the death of our son,” they said.

“Her professionalism and empathy made the difficult process more bearable. We are grateful for her role, helping us find closing in this difficult time. Please know that your efforts are appreciated and we are grateful for your service. “

Cunninghamem coroner said it wasn’t like a sincere Standtrue was always unhappy and her great smile and a sense of fun hit her.

“Ariel,” Lion of God, “was the first name. I saw how he showed courage, a feature related to the lion, in his determination, to overcome the feeling that he was not a good student, creating a significant job in a painting team, and find moments of joy in his days, by singing, laughter and interaction with others, especially younger children who get his mid -name, and his honesty and his absence. He rests in the room – she said.
