Bhubaneswar, on March 13 (PTI) Odisha reported 1859 deaths of a snake in Snakebite in the years 2023–24 and 2024–25, the minister informed the meeting on Thursday.

“According to the preliminary report, 1150 people died of a snake in 2023–24, while another 709 lost their lives in 2024–25,” said Minister Suresh Pujari (R&ND).

In accordance with governmental standards, the Department separates compensation to family members from the State Fund for responding to a catastrophe (SDRF), based on investigation at the local level and a posthumous report, said Pujari, responding to the request of MLA Subasini Jena.

The largest number of deaths of the snake was reported from Cuttaack District (162) and then Ganjam (155), Balasore (139), Keonjhar (132) and Sundargarh (102). He added that the Gajapati district recorded the lowest number of snake deaths, with only 10 cases during this period.

Of the 1,150 deaths of the snake in Snakebite reported in 2023–24, the compensation was issued to family members of 1022 victims, and 22 reports were rejected, and 106 cases remain at different levels, added Pujari.

In the years 2024–25, out of 709 cases, the minister said that EX gratia payments were transferred by the closest relatives of 435 victims.

Pujari explained that expecting matters are considered at Tahasildar, Podlasie and collector’s levels due to delays in obtaining guts and other required documents reports.

The minister said that the Odisha government announced a snake -specific catastrophe for you on April 1, 2015 and provides ex gratia in the amount of 4 Lakh RS to the next relative of each Snakebite victim.
