Hongkongers should be able to store embryos for an indefinite period: statutory body

Hongkongers should be able to store embryos as long as they want, regardless of age, sex or residents’ diseases, said the statutory authority among the decrease in the number of delivery.

The Council for Human Reproduction Technology raised a suggestion in an article published on Thursday, with monthly public consultations on the same day.

“The Council proposed that the duration and age of storage of gametes or embryos for their own use should be treated as a medical problem instead of legal issues,” he wrote.

“Hence (the Council proposes to raise) legal restrictions during the storage period of gametes or embryos for their own use, regardless of the conditions of sex, age, medical or social patients.”

Residents can currently store gametes or embryos for personal use for up to 10 years as part of the regulation of human reproductive technology (licensing).

The 10-year-old CAP also applies to the embryos of patients with cancer or residents who could be infertile as a result of chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or other drugs. Their gametes or reproductive cells can be stored for a decade or until the resident turns 55, depending on this, depending on this period.
