A 17-year-old girl died in a shark attack on Briby Island, north of Brisbane.

Sanitary rescue service Queensland was called on Woorim Beach shortly before 17:00.

It is understood that she has received upper body injuries while swimming at the south-eastern end of the island.

Surf Life Ravy Queensland confirmed that the teenager was fatally attacked by a shark.

“Woorim Beach will remain closed until further notice,” they said in a statement.

Woorim Beach is a popular place for swimming, surfing and fishing among residents and tourists.

Unlike the calm and protected west side of the island of Briba, the east coast is an open beach.

Local Christopher Potter said he went to the beach right after.

“There are many swimming groups that swim here, in the morning and afternoon,” he said.

“It is known that there are many sharks around Briby, but so close to the shore is still a shock.”

Drumlines, which are used for catching sharks with a lure and large hooks, are used on Woori beach.

This is the third shark attack in Queensland in less than three months, and the second fatal attack in just over a month.

In December, 40-year-old Luke Walford was killed, while Hislfisn in the southern great barrier reef near Humpa Island.

Earlier this month, the man was hospitalized after he was attacked by a shark, while he withdraws from the island of Curtis, near Gladstone.
