Kerala court grants bail to CPI(M) leader Divya, party says she is not an enemy but a cadre – ThePrint –

Kannur/Thrissur (Kerala), Nov 8 (PTI) A local court in Kannur on Friday granted bail to CPI(M) leader PP Divya in the abetment of suicide case in connection with the death of former ADM, even as the ruling party expressed its support, claiming , that the former Panchayat president is not an enemy but a party cadre.

Chief District Magistrate and Judicial Magistrate, Thalassery, KT Nissar Ahammed granted relief to Divya, former president of the Kannur district panchayat.

Divya, who is in judicial custody, had applied for regular bail after the court rejected her earlier bail plea on October 29.

Attending his farewell function allegedly uninvited on October 14, Divya criticized Additional District Judge Naveen Babu for delaying the approval of a petrol pump in Chengalai for several months and noted that he had given approval only two days after the transfer, hinting that she knew the reasons for the sudden nod.

The next day, Babu was found dead in his quarters in Kannur.

Divya’s bail conditions include not leaving Kannur district, not trying to influence witnesses in the case and appearing before the investigating officer on Monday.

Another condition imposed by the court when granting her surety was that two people be surety.

Her lawyer told reporters outside the court that while the bail was a relief, there are many issues that need to go before the court. “The truth must come out,” the lawyer said.

Meanwhile, the ruling CPI(M) has expressed support for Divya, saying she is a party cadre and not an enemy.

Amid reports that the CPI(M) has decided to remove Divya from its Kannur district committee, party state secretary MV Govindan said the “party’s intention is to correct the cadres and not kill them”. He also said there was nothing wrong with party leaders meeting Divya.

“He is not an enemy of the party. He is a party cadre. If the cadre makes a mistake, the party will correct it and move on,” he said.

Govindan also said that the party has already made it clear that it stands with Babu’s family.

After the verdict, Babu’s wife stated that the outcome was unexpected and that the family would decide how to proceed after discussions with a lawyer.

She announced that they would continue their legal fight.

Party leaders in Kannur welcomed Divya’s bail, saying she was a colleague who had made a mistake but she should not be shunned or sidelined because of it. She also has certain rights, including human rights, they argued.

Some leaders of the party’s district committee were waiting for her outside the prison where she is being held. PTI COR HMP SA
