The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has filed a formal complaint against LGBTQ dating app Grinder over its enforcement of a back-to-work policy that it claims was put in place solely to retaliate against unionizing.

According to reportGrindr has terminated the contracts of “approximately 83 employees” after they failed to comply with the RTO’s new mandate.

However, the employees were allegedly given only two weeks to shift to the designated nodal city or resign from their jobs.

The NLRB investigation was launched following six unfair labor practice allegations filed in August by employee representatives from California, Nevada and Hawaii.

Grindr’s relocation requirements were particularly difficult for many employees due to the short notice period. Transgender workers were most affected, as many had difficulty finding alternative health care in a timely manner.

The dating app denies the allegations, terming them “baseless” and arguing that the union activities came only after the company announced its RTO policy.

The union added: “In response, Grindr management hired notorious union-busting Littler Mendelson and quickly implemented a retaliatory return-to-office (RTO) policy.

More broadly, Grindr’s efforts to get workers back into offices reflect an industry-wide trend in the technology sector. Companies like Amazon, Google AND Microsoft all have limited the amount of time employees spend at home, but there is always criticism accusing companies of using these policies to encourage resignations and limit the need for layoffs.

If Grindr fails to reach an agreement, the case will be heard by an administrative law judge in March 2025.

The Grindr United-CWA union commented: “Today’s NLRB complaint is another huge victory for our union.”

Grindr did not immediately respond TechRadar Pro”request for comment.
